Repairs needed at Southbury Leisure Center – but facility will ‘remain open’

Unlike more severe issues identified at Edmonton Leisure Centre, which remains closed, the council says it has the money needed to repair Southbury

Southbury Leisure Center will “remain open” while essential repairs are made to its roof, pool and ventilation system, according to Enfield Council.

Amid growing concern over the fate of Edmonton Leisure Centre, which has remained closed now for seven months with repairs of £4.4m needed before it can reopen, the council has moved to quell fears over anything similar happening at Southbury.

After it was revealed that repairs were needed to the leisure center in Southbury Road, the council has clarified that no closures will be necessary and the money needed to carry out the maintenance work has already been identified.

Since December last year, the council’s leisure centers have been operated by Greenwich Leisure Ltd, under its brand name Better, after the contract was taken away from previous operator Fusion Lifestyle following a number of long-running issues.

Regarding the work now needed at Southbury Leisure Centre, a council spokesperson said: “We are committed to providing fun and accessible leisure activities and tackling health inequalities for our residents so they can lead more active and sociable lives. Our leisure provider Greenwich Leisure Limited identified necessary repairs at Southbury Leisure Centre, notably to the roof, swimming pool plant, and the air handling system.

“We are happy to say that Enfield Council has identified the funding needed to complete these essential repairs at pace this summer, with minimal disruption. The centre, one of the borough’s busiest, will remain open to residents and members throughout.”
