Arsenal beat Man Utd as PL title race goes down to final day…and Gunners pray for Ange miracle

TITLE RACE

1: Arsenal (P37, 86 points, +61)

The remaining fixings: Everton (h)

the 2nd: Manchester City (P36, 85 points, +58)

Remaining fasteners: Tottenham (a), West Ham United (h)

Well, isn’t that a bit exciting?

Both teams hung around for so long last season before Arsenal ran out of gas as Manchester City claimed their third straight league title.

But Mikel Arteta’s side now know what it takes to be a genuine title contender and remain firmly in the mix with a one-point buffer going into the final game.

With a slightly superior goal difference and unique points advantage, the title is Arsenal’s to lose at the moment.

However, Manchester City have that all-important game in hand, while Arsenal are praying their rivals Tottenham can get a result against Pep Guardiola’s side.

City’s result against Spurs on Wednesday morning (AEST) is sure to set the mood around the title race as both title contenders enjoy home games to end the season.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Remaining fasteners: Liverpool (h), Crystal Palace (a)

the 5th: Tottenham Hotspur (P36, 63 points, +12)

To most neutral observers, Aston Villa emerged as the surprise package of the season, but the rise of the Midlands club is one that fans will have seen coming.

Since Emery took over last year, Villa have become a fearsome outfit and they have continued the momentum this season despite losing star duo Tyrone Mings and Emi Buendia before the start of the season.

However, a lack of depth, several injuries to key players and a run to the Europa Conference League semi-finals have Emery’s men running on empty and stumbling over the finish line.

Tottenham have also suffered a major wobble of late, losing four games in a row to give Villa a leg up in the race for the final Champions League spot.

A vital win against Burnley interrupted that run, but a daunting challenge awaits them against Manchester City, who have title ambitions of their own.

Champions League qualification would cap an outstanding debut season for Ange Postecoglou as Premier League boss, but could it be a bridge too far?

OK, this is where things get pretty complicated, so bear with us.

Currently, fifth place receives direct entry into the Europa League, while sixth qualifies for the Europa Conference League play-offs, while the other Europa League spot goes to the winner of the FA Cup Final.

Just like last year, the FA Cup final is contested between Manchester City and Manchester United.

City have already qualified for the Champions League, meaning that if they win the FA Cup final, the Europa League spot goes to the sixth-placed team, allowing the seventh-placed team a place in the Europa Conference League.

That is why it is in the interests of Newcastle and Chelsea that Pep Guardiola’s side win back-to-back FA Cup trophies.

As for United, they would like to avoid the scenario of needing to win the FA Cup final just to reach the Europa League, but finishing in the top six will prove extremely difficult.

All eyes on the battle for the top six will no doubt be on Old Trafford on Thursday as United host Newcastle in a clash that has significant permutations in the race for Europe.

With Manchester United set to qualify for the Europa League if they win the FA Cup final, let’s break down all the scenarios should they lose the final.

BONKERS SCENARIO FOR RELEGATION IN CHAP

Burnley and Sheffield United are immediately back in the Championship and Luton Town are all but confirmed to join them.

But it has not yet been mathematically confirmed.

So how can the Hatters pull off a FIFA-like miracle to stay in the Premier League?

Luton currently have 26 points with a goal difference of -31, while Nottingham Forest are in 17th place with 29 points and a goal difference of -19.

If Luton are to survive, they need to beat Fulham on the final day of the season, hope Nottingham Forest lose to Burnley and, somewhere in the middle of the madness, have a 12-goal swing.

It is extremely unlikely, but it ain’t over till it’s over.
