Anthony Gordon Liverpool transfer talks align with ‘growing concern’ over Newcastle’s future

Anthony Gordon is reportedly still distracted from potentially signing for Liverpool this summer.

Gordon, 23, is in England’s training camp at the European Championships but has barely played. The Newcastle United winger made just one appearance as an 89th-minute substitute in the final group stage match against Slovenia.

After that game, the ECHO reported that the Reds had rejected the chance to sign the childhood Liverpool fan after he was approached by the North East club. The following day, England cruised past Slovakia after extra time in the round of 16, and Sunday’s quarter-finals went to penalties.

In those 240 minutes, Gordon didn’t feature at all, and the Daily Star now reports there is “growing concern” in the camp that the player is being distracted by speculation and has “taken his eye off the ball a bit”. . That would probably explain why Gordon played by far the fewest minutes of all 21 players who played.

Luke Shaw even managed to play more than a winger despite not being fit enough to play in the first four games. Apart from Adam Wharton, Lewis Dunk and Joe Gomez, plus back-up goalkeepers Aaron Ramsdale and Dean Henderson, all of whom have not played, Gordon is last on the pitch.

His closest comparison is Ollie Watkins, who got at least 20 minutes in a cameo off the bench against Denmark. The Aston Villa forward was also the subject of a rumored move to Liverpool earlier this summer.
