Van driver who plowed into power pole and caused major power outage on the run

Police say a van driver who crashed into a utility pole and then fled the scene remains on the run. As a result of the incident, households along Nuneaton Road in Bulkington were left without power on Saturday evening (May 11).

The driver crashed into a three-way power pole, sending “rains of sparks” across the road as well as live power lines. Fire and police responded to 999 calls.

But the driver fled the scene, leaving the van “smoking” and damage in its wake. Because of the potential danger posed by live electrical wires, National Grid was forced to turn off power.

This affected properties along the road, with some still without power the following morning. A Warwickshire Police spokesman said: “The driver of the van was reported to have fled the scene.

“The collision also caused damage to the wall of a house. A road closure was put in place and did not reopen until the next morning.

“Enquiries into the collision are ongoing and we would appeal to anyone with dash cam or CCTV footage to come forward.” Anyone who can help police should either come forward via the police website here or by calling 101 quoting incident number 392 of May 11.

Details can be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers via their website or on 0800 555 111.
