Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier has been linked with a move to sign for Marseille this summer, but there has been nothing in the way of an expression of interest yet.

Leeds’ summer window this time around will be very much about how Daniel Farke ensures as much continuity as possible in the side that starts in August.

Exits and receipts are of course expected in due course, but major sales are kept to a minimum within PSR rationale.

Illan Meslier has been linked to the transfer of Marseille under Roberto De Zerbi

Reports in France, including Foot Mercato, claimed that Leeds stopper Illan Meslier was of interest to Marseille.

Now managed by Roberto De Zerbi, the French outfit are looking for improvements to their squad this summer and the number one spot is one of them.

The 24-year-old is in the final two years of his contract this season as his deal runs until the summer of 2026 at Elland Road.

Are you happy that Red Bull have invested in Leeds?

Graham Smyth closes Meslier links as ‘not real’

Links have cooled between Meslier and a move back to France with Marseille, and YEP’s Graham Smyth has played down the idea of him moving there.

Speaking on the Inside Elland Road podcast, he said:

“The Marseille thing for me is just not real.

“Someone is doing it but Leeds are not aware of the interest, which means the interest is not real because there haven’t even been tentative enquiries, so I think it’s a non-starter at the moment.”

Meslier should be considered for a move, but he would be wrong with Marseille

If Leeds are looking to make a steady return on a player who won’t require drastic efforts to replace or even improve, Meslier should be high on the list.

He has produced some huge moments with smart saves, but this is also balanced or outweighed by some really poor frailties that show no sign of improvement.

In particular, his distribution is becoming more of a problem than a boon to our build-up now, which is a stark contrast to what he promised on his 2020 debut at Arsenal.

Because of this, you would wonder why De Zerbi would supposedly be interested in him in the first place, given that he needs his goalkeeper to be as good on the ball as the players he plays for.
