Wigan Warriors fans fume as Brad O’Neill banned for ‘hand tackle’

Wigan Warriors fans have been left clutching at straws as they try to find out why England international hooker Brad O’Neill has been suspended ahead of Friday’s derby against St Helens.

It’s a decision that has caused confusion and uproar among Wigan fans, with the club now without a single recognized prostitute in their squad for the derby against St Helens.

Kruise Leeming and Tom Forber are both injured, putting Matt Peet’s side in a difficult position, something St Helens will also be in with Daryl Clark injured and Moses Mbye banned. However, St Helens will appeal the ban, but it has been confirmed that Wigan will not.

This was reported by Wigan today Josh McAllister, who revealed that Matt Peet has confirmed the club will not challenge Brad O’Neill’s suspension, a decision which has sparked almost as much outrage and confusion as the Match Review Commission’s decision to ban the youngster 21 years old.

Brad O’Neill was sent off for a sin-binned tackle on Robbie Mulhern which led to a B-grade charge for a ‘Dangerous Throw/Lift’ much to the disgust of the Wigan fans.

Brad O’Neill ban labeled ’embarrassing’

After match review reports confirmed the ban and revealed when exactly the in-game incident took place, footage of the alleged offense was quickly posted on social media.

Fan reaction to this was labeled a “textbook venture”, while another Wigan Warriors fan argued the club should appeal, claiming Brad O’Neill had “thrown him on the back”, referring to Leigh’s Mulhern.

One fan would even argue it was the RFL’s way of “nighting out” teams, with St Helens missing nine players last week, something Paul Wellens noted after his side lost 8-6 to Castleford Tigers.

One fan quipped: “Let’s give the Saints a chance because they’ve got half a team” in full effect as they showed their disdain for the ban.

There was probably more disdain for the club’s decision not to appeal the ban, but one fan has hypothesized why, claiming it’s part of a longer ploy.

Despite labeling Brad O’Neill’s ban ’embarrassing’, one Wigan fan posited: “I’m starting to think we’re not appealing any bans because when it comes to the playoffs we’ll appeal anything small bans and will be lifted as we have been compliant with MRP all season.

“That’s the only reason I can think of because that ban for O’Neill is embarrassing.”

Only Matt Peet will know why that decision was made, but another joked it was because he had an ace up his sleeve, claiming he saw assistant coach Tommy Leuluai “looking at boots on Sports Direct”.

With both teams potentially without a recognized hooker, it will be an interesting affair with St Helens, one of two teams to beat Wigan Warriors so far this season, something the reigning champions will be desperate to avenge.
