Super League injury news: Leeds Rhinos and St Helens suffer knocks

Round 10 of the Super League has brought some incredible rugby and some huge results for teams looking to kick-start the rest of the season, but injuries have tarnished some of those performances.

Catalans Dragons lost badly again as they were beaten 30-8 by Wigan Warriors.

Leeds Rhinos demolished London Broncos 46-8 in a much improved performance from last week against Hull FC, who lost again this weekend, this time to Warrington Wolves.

Elsewhere, Paul Rowley’s Salford Red Devils beat in-form Huddersfield Giants 18-16, potentially surprising a few.

Paul Wellens’ St Helens side are struggling and lost 40-20 to surprise package Hull KR this season in what was a huge statement of intent from the Robins.

Castleford Tigers brought the drama as their inspired performance from twins Tex Hoy and Senior secured a 28-28 draw with Leigh Leopards, who are first this season.

This weekend’s results leave six of the twelve teams level on points at the top of the table.

Leeds Rhinos: Brodie Croft (groin), Riley Lumb (hamstring)

The Rhinos, despite the comfortable win, will be concerned after Croft’s injury.

He scored in the game but left with a groin injury later in the first half.

After the game, head coach Rohan Smith said: “Brodie has had some tightness in his groin.

“Let’s hope it’s more cautious that we made this choice than anything too significant.”

They also, unfortunately for the young winger, lost Riley Lumb just a week after his man of the match performance on his Hull FC debut where he scored twice.

He would have come into the game full of confidence but was forced off just a minute into the game.

Smith said: “Lumby is hurting with a hamstring injury.

“With some of the hamstring injuries I’ve had over the last couple of years, the least painful ones are the long-term ones.

“Hopefully this is a reversal of that.”

London Broncos: Jacob Jones (Head)

Jones, on a month’s loan from Leigh Leopards, took a knock to the head early in the second half and never returned to the pitch.

Hull KR: Elliot Minchella (groin), James Batchelor (eye), Oliver Gildart (knee)

It was an incredible win for the Robins this week, but they are dealing with more fresh injury problems.

Elliot Minchella went off late on with a groin injury, while James Batchelor went off with an eye injury just after the break.

Oliver Gildart had to withdraw before the game started with a knee problem.

Head coach Willie Peters said: “Hopefully (Batchelor) is OK. Oli (Gildart) and (Minchella), I’m not sure if five days will be enough.”

St Helens: Matt Whitley (shoulder)

A disappointing loss and injury to Matt Whitley this week for Saints as the forward was seen on the sidelines before deciding he could not return to the field.

Paul Wellens said of it: “I think it’s a bit of a shoulder problem.

“I’m not too sure at this point…hopefully it’s not too serious.”

Catalans Dragons: Paul Seguier (foot), Ben Garcia (concussion)

In the 30-8 defeat to Wigan Warriors, the Catalans lost two big names.

Seguier was clearly struggling to walk, but Ben Garcia’s retirement seemed harmless at the time.

Steve McNamara explained their situations: “We lost Ben Garcia to a concussion.

(Seguier) is being evaluated by doctors now. It doesn’t look great.

“It’s a knee/lower leg injury.”

Salford Red Devils: Joe Shorrocks (knee), Joe Mellor (hand)

The Red Devils’ impressive win was marred by two new injury concerns.

Shorrocks’ knee injury has ruled him out, meaning he could be looking at a long spell on the sidelines.

Joe Mellor can too when he broke his hand.

Castleford Tigers: Sam Hall (concussion), Sam Wood (thumb)

It was thrilling drama as Castleford fought back to salvage an equaliser.

However, they also suffered other injury concerns.

Head coach Craig Lingard said: “Sam (Hall) failed his HIA and I think Sam Wood got a knock on the thumb.

“We’re not too sure if he needs an X-ray.”

The Tigers’ injury list is extensive and has been in double figures for several weeks.
