Guardiola’s position gives club hope of convincing Manchester City – Two offers on the table lead to stalemate

Barcelona hope Pep Guardiola’s insistence that Joao Cancelo not join Manchester City for pre-season will help them sign the Portuguese defender this summer.

So say Sport, who report that Saudi Arabian duo Al-Ahli and Al-Ettifaq have both made offers for the defender, who they have so far refused to entertain.

The paper explains that Saudi sides are pushing to land the full-back and Manchester City would prioritize a sale rather than the loan deal Barcelona want.

Both clubs have bids of €25m to Manchester City for Cancelo, offers which the Premier League side would be happy to accept as they look to get rid of the Portuguese star following his spell with Pep Guardiola.

The player received offers from Saudi Arabia last summer but turned down a move despite them offering him an “astronomical sum” when it comes to wages.

Instead, he applied for a loan to Barcelona and it was eventually granted, with Manchester City lowering their demands to allow the deal to go through.

Barcelona want another loan deal this summer with a non-binding option to buy included, but Manchester City want a permanent sale and so things have stalled, especially as they have offers from Saudi Arabia on the table.

Barcelona, however, are hoping that Pep Guardiola’s insistence that the player not join his pre-season squad will force City to change their plans.

Cancelo has already made it clear that he will not listen to other offers, namely those from Saudi Arabia, and Barca hope to use that and Guardiola’s position to force City to accept the loan deal they ultimately want.
