Jamie Carragher shares a three-word verdict on England’s penalty shootout in the Euro 2024 semi-final

Jamie Carragher expressed his disbelief that England were awarded a penalty in their Euro 2024 semi-final with the Netherlands on Wednesday night.

Gareth Southgate’s side fell behind ten minutes into Dortmund to a superb Xavi Simons strike from outside the box, though they were level 11 minutes later after winning a spot-kick.

Harry Kane went down in the box after firing a shot over the bar after feeling contact with the boot of Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries. Referee Felix Zwayer saw nothing wrong with the challenge, although he was soon referred to the on-field monitor and shortly afterwards pointed to the penalty spot.

Kane stepped up and slotted past Bart Verbruggen to bring England back on level terms, although not everyone was convinced the Three Lions deserved the penalty they received.

Sharing that mindset, Carragher took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his disapproval of the decision. “Never a penalty,” wrote the Liverpool legend after witnessing this game.

Also of the opinion that England were lucky to be given the opportunity to score from 12 yards, ITV co-commentator Lee Dixon remarked live: “I’m pleased, don’t get me wrong, but you have to challenge for the ball. I don’t think it’s a penalty, but I don’t care.”
