Take a look inside York’s newest coffee shop serving up brownies and coffee

A delicious new addition has opened on York’s Swinegate.

If you’re looking for a tasty sweet treat while shopping in York city centre, then The Savvy Baker has you covered.

The new cafe, which opened over the weekend, specializes in brownies and coffee and is a sweet tooth’s dream. It is located at 16 Swinegate and was previously the home of homewares store Opulence.

The cafe will have more than 16 brownie and blondie flavors at any one time, plus special filled cookies and seasonal changes. Tempting treats include Twix, Kinder, Jaffa Cake, Caramel Cornflakes, S’mores, Raspberry and White Chocolate and Crunchie.

Brownies and blondies cost £3.70 each, or you can buy a box of four for £14 or a box of nine for £30.

The venue serves specialty coffee from North Star Coffee Roasters in Leeds and currently offers summer drink specials such as an Iced Kinder, Raspberry Iced Matcha and Iced Biscoff. All summer drink specials are priced at £4.75 and have the option to add a shot of espresso for £1.50.

Savannah Roqaa, founder of The Savvy Baker

The Savvy Baker was founded by Savannah Roqaa in 2020 in what started as a block project.

“I was bored and felt like baking, just like everyone else,” Savannah said YorkMix. “I let my friends have them and they posted them on their social media and before I knew it I had old friends, friends of friends and people I didn’t know messaging me asking me to buy! “

Savannah then started an Instagram page for her baking and started selling from there, before doing her first pop-up and having “a huge line for hours of customers wanting to try my brownie- hours – I couldn’t believe it”.

She then built a bakery inside a warehouse unit in Seacroft, Leeds, and opened a cafe in Roundhay, Leeds, with her partner Jordan Simms.

Now, after “hundreds of pop-up stalls, markets and pop-up shops”, The Savvy Baker has come to York!

“York is a great location, it’s a completely different setting to our other stores. The combination of a local community, small businesses and tourism really gives York a unique edge.”

Inside The Savvy Baker

The Savvy Baker opened on Saturday 6th July and we were ‘sure there would be some hiccups but to our surprise it went really well. I think we need a few more chairs and tables as we had a queue of customers wanting to sit inside.”

Right now, the cafe is mainly take-out, with some relaxing indoor seating.

Savvy Baker will be open daily from 10am to 5pm on weekdays and Saturdays and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.

“We’re so excited to show York what we have to offer – once you’ve tried a brownie, you’ll be hooked!”

Learn more about The Savvy Baker on their website, where you can also order brownies online. You can also find them on Facebook and Instagram.
