The idea of a tax in Bristol Downs, branded by locals as “a stupid tax

Tory councilors have hit out at the idea that people living near the Downs should pay extra to maintain it – and Bristol Live readers agree in our comments section.

A Liberal Democrat councilor suggested the move for residents near Clifton Down and Durdham Down last month and Council staff are in early discussions about a £20 annual charge. Tory councilor for Stoke Bishop, John Goulandris, said: “There are many objections that can be raised against this extraordinarily bad idea, not the least of which is that it is hugely discriminatory. Durdham Downs has been bequeathed to the benefit of all Bristol citizens and remains one of the most important green spaces in our city.”

“We would be going down a very slippery slope indeed if local authorities were allowed to charge people extra just because of where they happen to live. Accordingly, I will seek assurances from the council leader that his administration will never introduce this measure.”

Reader KaptainVon thinks it would set a precedent: “The problem with taxes is that they spread and escalate, especially if politicians see them as a way to fill their coffers. First it’s twenty pounds, then 10% more a few years later. Then it’s an annual increase if you live next to any park in the city and then if I can get away with it, it’s going to be “You live next to a nice tree, please make it fifty pounds!”.

BMushroom says: “Great to see a sensible approach from the Tory councillor.” Citizenpip called the proposal “106% bullshit.”

Downsderro comment reads: “How about actually policing in the Downs and stopping/fining people for driving/parking on grass or throwing food wrappers out of the car like we saw at Sea Walls last week? I’m sure most of these types. you don’t live nearby.”
