Sacked Leicester MP Jonathan Ashworth has a new job

Jonathan Ashworth has taken up a new job after losing his seat in Parliament last week. The former Labor MP for Leicester South has represented the area since 2011, taking over from now mayor Sir Peter Soulsby.

However, voters in the constituency ousted him at the general election last Thursday, July 4, in a shock move that saw Leicester South back independent candidate Shockat Adam. People in the constituency told LeicestershireLive that Adam’s victory was at least partly down to views on the war in Gaza.

Mr Ashworth had been earmarked for a top role in Sir Keir Starmer’s new Labor government. He had previously been the party’s shadow paymaster-general and played a key role in Labour’s election campaign.

Now Mr Ashworth has accepted a new job at a Labor think tank. He was appointed executive director of Working Together.

Posting on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, he said: “LabourTogether (LT) was so essential to our victory last week. LT will continue to generate bold ideas to transform Britain for the better and help win a second term. I am so honored and excited to now be a part of this amazing team.”

The think tank also shared the news about X, saying: “We are delighted to welcome him (Mr Ashworth) as our new chief executive.”
