Peterborough United star Burrows wanted by ‘massive L1 club’

Peterborough United chairman and co-owner Darragh MacAnthony says: a “massive League 1 club” is in the running for Sheffield United target Harrison Burrows.

Peterborough United star Burrows looks set to move away from the League One club this summer, with Sheffield United and Preston North End among the sides heavily linked.

Reports even said the left-back had undergone a medical with the Blades. However, things have quietened down since then, with talks to take over the relegated club extending.

Preston’s bid has reportedly been rejected, but there appears to be renewed interest in Burrows amid the latest update from Posh chairman and co-owner Darragh MacAnthony.

As quoted by the Peterborough Telegraph , the Peterborough United boss revealed that a “massive League One club” are also in the running for the 22-year-old. However, MacAnthony remains relaxed about Burrows’ fate. He said:

“Harrison is coveted by several clubs.

“Three Championship clubs have consistently bid for him and a massive League One club really want him. Everyone tells me we’re asking too much for a player entering the final year of his contract, but I ask them how they would rate a 22-year-old who won Ligue 1 Player of the Year last season?

“He’s under 24 and he’s been with us since he was nine so I’m actually very relaxed about his contract situation because we’d get millions from a tribunal if he went that far.”

MacAnthony later added that Coventry City were not among the clubs bidding, although they are believed to be monitoring his situation.

Intended for a move?

MacAnthony would later admit that Burrows was more than ready and deserved a move to the next level. This is abundantly clear after his amazing season with Peterborough United.

However, as Posh always do, they are adamant about their valuation of one of their key assets. He’s seen them make fantastic returns over the years and they’re poised to do the same when Burrows leaves.

It seems that exactly where the left-back star is headed remains to be seen.

Sheffield United, Preston North End and Coventry City would give Burrows the foothold to the Championship he deserves. However, with the unnamed “massive” League One side heavily interested, he may yet remain in the third tier.

There is no indication from MacAnthony as to who the unnamed club is, but the Peterborough Telegraph say Birmingham City “would appear” to be Burrows’ unnamed admirers.

A new star

Burrows had long been tipped to star at Peterborough United. Many thought he would be in a more attacking role, having played as a winger, attacking midfielder and central midfielder.

However, a system change saw Burrows lock down a starting spot at left-back. He was given license to get forward at every opportunity, with Darren Ferguson ensuring his sweet left boot and impressive technical skills were involved in the build-up and attacking play.

As such, he scored a fantastic 12 goals and 18 assists from left-back last season. Burrows’ leadership was on display when he assumed the captain’s armband in the new year.

Such success would justify a big move. With Sheffield United, Preston North End, Coventry City and an unnamed League One club keen, time will tell exactly where the Peterborough United star is headed.
