Curbside glass collections for the first time will start in Leeds next month, it has been confirmed.

Currently, residents must recycle glass at points around the city, including near schools and supermarkets.

But the council is introducing kerbside collections from August 1, in a move it claims will save 2,6000 tonnes of carbon a year.

This is the equivalent of taking 975 cars off the road each year.

Glass of all colors and shapes will be put in the green bins, meaning everything from wine, spirits and beer bottles to jam and sauce jars can be recycled.

Councilor Mohammed Rafique, Leeds City Council’s executive member for climate, energy, environment and green spaces, said: “We are delighted to be able to start this glass collection service, which we know has long been an aspiration for the city and its residents .

“From August 1, people can put their bottles and jars in the existing green bin, which will make a significant difference to our recycling rates and benefit the environment and local economy.

“This is part of providing easier recycling opportunities and options for Leeds residents, without creating more bins for them to manage and take to the streets.

“It’s going to be a win-win all the way and we can’t wait to get started.”
