£380,000 for 178 lamp post charging points

Lambeth Council will spend £380,000 to install 178 lamppost recharging points across the borough.

The Council’s Deputy Leader (Sustainable Lambeth and Clean Air), Councilor Rezina Chowdhury, was asked to approve the proposals after the consultation period ended.

£227,405 of this total will come from the Department for Transport under the Residential Street Charges Scheme. Lambeth’s capital investment program will cover the rest of the cost.

The plans were first brought forward in January 2024. Lambeth had to carry out a statutory consultation on the locations of the charging points.

This resulted in 38 representations relating to 22 locations, with 26 objections to the proposals and one in support.

Council officers add:

“Many of the objections focused on the impact that the introduction of a charging point and recharging parking space for electric vehicles would have on the availability of kerbside parking space for residents to park in the vicinity of their properties, some opponents suggesting that the loading point. should be provided elsewhere on the road/area.”

There are currently 385 charging points in Lambeth. The pole conversion work is expected to start immediately.
