Kate will be watching England’s Rugby World Cup quarter-final match

The Princess of Wales will cheer on England when she attends the Rugby World Cup quarter-final match against Papua New Guinea.

Kate will attend the match at Wigan on Saturday, her first game since succeeding the Duke of Sussex as patron of the Rugby Football League (RFL).

Harry launched the World Cup draw in January 2020, just over a week after announcing he wanted to step down with wife Meghan as a royal working for personal and financial freedom.

He was expected to take part in the tour hosted by England, but it was pushed back a year after Australia and New Zealand refused to take part, citing safety concerns due to the pandemic.

RFL Chairman Simon Johnson said: “We will be delighted and honored to welcome The Princess of Wales as Royal Patron of the RFL for the first time.

“With our England women’s and men’s teams playing important World Cup matches on Saturday, her presence will enhance a special occasion for our sport, the World Cup and the famous rugby league town of Wigan.”

The tournament featured the sport of rugby league, women’s and wheelchair World Cups running alongside the men’s championship for the first time.

Before the quarter-finals kick off, the princess will meet the England and Papua New Guinea teams on the pitch and will also hold a minute’s silence to mark the tournament’s Movember Mental Fitness Match Day, a gesture pest control. the impact silence can have on men’s mental well-being.

Ahead of the game, Kate will speak to representatives of groups that have been instrumental in implementing the RLWC2021 Social Impact Programme.

Launched in June 2018, the initiative aims to provide a positive impact to local communities, primarily focusing on the tournament’s host cities and towns.

Over the past four years, more than £25m has been made through the program to tackle inequalities, increase opportunities for people from all backgrounds to access rugby league and promote positive mental health.

During the break, the princess will also meet the England women’s team, who will play Canada in a group game earlier in the day.
