Super League Disciplinary: Several teams are sweating on bans after a flurry of red cards

Super League disciplinary action has slowed in recent weeks after the peak of Round One which saw 16 charges, however Round Eleven could also attract a whole raft of charges after six action-packed matches.

The action kicked off on Thursday night as Warrington Wolves went top of the Super League with a controlled win over Hull KR. The Wire raced into an 18-0 lead as they exposed the Robins’ right flank and, despite an improved second-half performance from the visitors, Sam Burgess’ side ran out 20-8 winners.

It was a game without disciplinary concerns, but the same could not be said for Friday night with two red cards in the Castleford Tigers v St Helens game. Saints ran out 60-4 winners despite losing Tommy Makinson in the 12th minute, but Cas capitulated after going down to 12, conceding 46 points in the last 28 minutes.

Leigh’s fine form continued after last week’s hiccup when they drew against Castleford Tigers as the Leopards ran out 40-12 winners over Salford Red Devils.

Saturday’s action began with a yellow card as Liam Byrne was sent off for ten for his first tackle of the game against Huddersfield, however, it would not stop Wigan from running riot in the second half as they won by 48-6.

There was another one-sided scoreline on the day, with Catalans Dragons beating Leeds Rhinos 26-0 in an error-filled game, adding more pressure to head coach Rohan Smith.

The result of the weekend came on Sunday though as London Broncos got their first win of the season with a 34-18 victory over Hull FC, but it was not a game without controversy. Chris Kendall reported an early incident and a yellow card was also shown, meaning it’s a game that will attract plenty of Super League disciplinary attention.

From the six games, there are likely to be plenty of Super League disciplinary consequences, but which players could be in trouble and join the list of players who have served bans this season?

There are likely to be no Super League disciplinary issues from Warrington v Hull KR on Thursday, but Friday’s action will certainly warrant a second look.

Both Tommy Makinson and Liam Horne were sent off for head contact and a top tackle respectively, while Friday’s other game saw several incidents go unpunished on the pitch.

Leigh’s Owen Trout was involved in a tackle that injured Jack Ormnondroyd with Kevin Brown on commentary referring to it as a crushing tackle, something that could bring a charge.

As for Saturday, there were two yellow cards in the Huddersfield v Wigan game, notably Liam Byrne’s in the first minute, which Jon Wilkin argued should have been a red card based on Tommy Makinson’s eliminated the night before.

Esan Marsters also saw yellow for tripping in that game, while he will be focusing heavily on the London game.

Chris Kendall has reported an incident with a Hull FC player believed to have made “inappropriate comments”, which the RFL confirmed to Serious About Rugby League will be investigated as part of today’s Super League disciplinary process.

Jordan Lane was also sent off, but the identity of the player involved in the incident will be of major interest.

Below is a list of those players who could be in hot water.

Owen Trout (Crusher Tackle that injured Ormondroyd)
Tommy Makinson (Red Card – Contact with boss)
Liam Horne (Red Card – Peak Tackle)
Liam Byrne – (Yellow card – High tackle on first tackle of the game)
Esan Marster – (Yellow card for travel)
Jordan Lane (yellow card)
