Mom shares a simple banana storage hack to keep them fresh longer

Bananas, a common sight in fruit bowls, tend to brown quickly, which often leads to them being tossed. However, a simple storage hack that has been circulating online could be the solution.

The tip and trick above doesn’t require any special containers or devices either, which makes it all the more special. It means you’ll likely find what you need in your kitchen drawer as a result, the Express reports.

The hack was revealed by TikTok parent content creator Sarah, who revealed her hack for when she prepares her kids’ lunches. She noted that her children are usually encouraged by bananas that have turned brown.

In her TikTok on the @momthoughts account, she said, “I’m not very expert, but I know these things. You know how sometimes you send a decent banana to school, but he comes home looking like he got into a bar fight?”

“That’s because bananas release ethylene gas which speeds up the ripening process and most of it is released through the stem. All you have to do is take a small piece of tin foil, wrap the stem and voila.”

The top tip was echoed by many on Reddit, with others sharing their own methods for keeping bananas fresh. One said: “I saw a trick online where you put a bit of plastic wrap at the point where it connects.

“It helps the bananas last longer. Any bananas that turn super brown, just make smoothies, banana bread, and pancakes with them. No need to waste and throw them out. According to a quick Google search, wrapping it in cling film or aluminum foil reduces the release of ethylene gas. The more ethylene gas it releases, the faster it browns.”
