Romano transfer reports cautioned as Rangers count £4.5m cost of missed opportunity

When Rangers sold Glen Kamara to Leeds United last summer, there was a sense of regret over the transfer.

While Rangers recouped around £5m from the sale of Kamara to the Elland Road side, this was half the amount offered in Ligue 1 the previous year.

Dwelling on the Finland international for too long has cost Rangers up to £5million and increased scrutiny of an underperforming recruitment department.

It is just one story in a long line of player transfer disasters during Ross Wilson’s ill-fated reign in Glasgow.

And the latest transfer reports surrounding Glen Kamara don’t exactly make good reading for that either, even if the Gers are set for a welcome cash boost.

Leeds almost double Kamara’s investment

Back to the summer of 2022 and Giovanni van Bronckhorst had just reached the Europa League final and won the Scottish Cup with Rangers.

While the jury was out on the Dutchman’s Scottish Premiership credentials, a bigger summer of investment was expected in Glasgow.

As part of this, the futures of several players – not least Glen Kamara – were under the microscope as Rangers looked to move on from the Steven Gerrard era.

But, as we’re sure you don’t need reminding, the Rangers stood firm and eventually Gio paid the price.

Glen Kamara, who did not appear keen to stay at Rangers after Calvin Bassey and Joe Aribo left the club, also saw £10m links with OGC Nice collapse on deadline day.

Fast forward exactly a year later and in the closing stages of last summer’s transfer window, Kamara negotiated a £5m move to promotion chasing Leeds United.

As top Rangers insiders Four Lads Had a Dream explained, the Gers have also introduced a number of add-ons to the deal.

While Rangers missed out on a cash boost for Kamara after Leeds were beaten in the Championship play-off final, they now expect an extra payday this summer.

That’s because – at least according to Fabrizio Romano – Glen Kamara is closing in on a €10m (£8.6m) move to Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais.

Rangers – who the Daily Record believe have a 10% sell-on attached to the deal – would be on the lookout for £860,000 of the sale.

But with sales generally looking at any profit, it’s more likely to be closer to 10% of the £3.6m profit Leeds are said to make from the transfer (£360,000 sterling).

Failure to trade Rangers players costs club

Don’t get us wrong, there is cause for celebration here at Ibrox.

Glen Kamara cost Rangers £50,000 when he signed from Dundee in January 2019 and has been a key player as the club have celebrated mixed domestic and European success.

Winning the Premiership and Scottish Cup, Glen also scored in the Europa League semi-final against RB Leipzig at Ibrox.

In short, the midfielder gave us a solid turn, making 193 appearances in four-and-a-half seasons in Glasgow.

But what we are shadowed by is Rangers’ staggering inability to secure maximum value for their players at the height of their Ibrox careers.

Philippe Clement has been clear about the need for change – perhaps with too much trepidation ahead of the new campaign – but there have been too many transfer failures over the years to count.

Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos and Filip Helander left last summer without even a bean being generated.

The same happened this summer with Borna Barisic, John Lundstram and Kemar Roofe.

These were all well-paid players who at various points in their Rangers careers would have brought us a profit or at least an investment.

While in Glen Kamara Rangers could have recouped the best part of £5.5m, there is a sinking feeling that it could, and probably should, have been at least £4.5m pounds more.
