University of Warwick cat owner sparks Euro 2024 trend after Three Lions ‘jibe’

Hundreds of England fans have tonight (Sunday 14 July) shared images of their cats ‘freaking out’ ahead of the UEFA Euro 2024 final. It comes after Swiss fans were seen holding a sign during the quarter-final suggesting England’s team had more three kittens than Three Lions.

England beat Switzerland 5-3 on penalties during that July 6 clash and will face Spain today (July 14) at 8pm. Robb Corrigan launched a social media campaign with the hashtag #CatsRoarForEngland, starring his cat Rolf.

Rolf, better known online as Rolf the Warwick University Campus Cat, has tens of thousands of followers on X. His post has been viewed thousands of times and hundreds of pet owners have joined the trend.

It even includes Downing Street cat Larry and Treasury mogul Gladstone, the BBC reports. Although Mr Corrigan admitted they were “mostly yawns, but they look like roars”.

He said: “Thanks to X’s ‘cat influencers’ who got the word out and all the fabulous felines who have joined so far, but there’s still time to show your support for England. Just post a photo of your cat making a facial expression that looks like a roar with the name and hashtag #CatsRoarForEngland.”
