Dominos Pizza have already made their feelings known about Trent Alexander-Arnold ahead of the Euro 2024 final

When England beat Switzerland to book their place in the semi-finals of the European Championship, it was a brilliant penalty kick from Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold under pressure that sealed the deal. Against Holland a few days later, however, the Reds’ ace was not even used from the bench.

While Gareth Southgate led his country to another major final and might even win the trophy – it would be fair to say that the Alexander-Arnold midfield experiment has failed. As talented as Liverpool’s number 66 is, England have yet to see the best of him in a problem of their own making.

The same could be said of Harry Kane and Phil Foden. Jude Bellingham had his moments at Euro 2024, but even the Real Madrid man looked broken and lacking in confidence at times. Southgate will point to his record of reaching another final, of course, but this is a very talented group that should be capable of even more.

Alexander-Arnold was the most divisive figure in the England team – and there always has to be one. Liverpool know how good their vice-captain is, but he has yet to be given the platform on the international stage to show that too.

Dominos Pizza summed it up quite nicely on social media after Alexander-Arnold sent England into the final four. Posting a picture of an open pizza box, the words ‘Delivery for Southgate’ were written inside.

And yet, Alexander-Arnold missed out on playing in the semi-final and will not play for the Three Lions against Spain today. Whether or not he comes off the bench remains to be seen, but there shouldn’t be any doubt. If England win the European Championship, it will be despite, rather than because, not selecting Alexander-Arnold as often.

Liverpool.com says: Whether England are victorious tonight or not, they didn’t make the most of Alexander-Arnold’s talent. Southgate has been lucky with his route to the final and the Liverpool man and others have yet to perform very well in Germany. That won’t change no matter what happens against Spain.
