Live: M4 traffic comes to a standstill as car catches fire

All traffic has stopped on the M4 and long delays are expected after a car caught fire. The incident happened just before 2pm and is affecting westbound traffic between J19 of the M4 with the M32 towards Bristol and J20 with the M5.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), National Highways South West warned all motorists that delays will increase as 999 emergency services are called to the scene.



Avon Fire and Rescue crews and police officers from Avon and Somerset Constabulary are already at the scene. We’ll keep you posted on any developments in the blog below.


M4 eastbound now closed

Traffic monitoring website Inrix has confirmed that two lanes are closed and traffic is slowing due to another vehicle fire on the M4 East from J20 M5 J15 (Almondsbury Interchange) to J19 M32 (Bristol).

This is separated from the previous vehicle fire in the opposite direction.

Traffic slow due to car fire early on M4 westbound from J19 M32 (Bristol) to J20 M5 J15 (Almondsbury change).

All lanes have been reopened.

The police confirm the presence

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Constabulary said: “We were called at 2.35pm to reports of a car fire between junctions 19 (M32) and 20 (M5) of the M4.

“Our officers attended alongside the fire service and the westbound carriageway was closed. Since then, a lane has been reopened”.

Expect possible long delays

Lane 1 and 2 closed

Two lanes are now closed and traffic is slow due to the incident involving a car fire on the M4 Westbound from J19 M32 (Bristol) to J20 M5 J15 (Almondsbury Interchange).

A spokesman for traffic monitoring website Inrix said: “Traffic was stopped for approximately five minutes, after which lanes one and two remain closed.”
