‘Just for fun’: Newmarket boy’s unnamed birthday generates excitement

The unique celebration brings a “little joy” to the community, and Loblaws sends a personalized gift package to the young fan

Newmarket resident Daley Fry has thrown plenty of themed birthday parties for her children over the years.

A regular shopper at the Loblaws grocery chain, Fry said her son, JT, made an unusual request for his 12th birthday party: a No Name brand theme.

Fry said the family decided to push the claim further.

“Where we shop all the time, there was something different that she saw in the stores,” she said, adding that birthday themes are “just something we do to help them celebrate their birthday. .This was the biggest homework I did. .”

The Fry family celebrated their birthday in June, with Loblaws recognizing the family with a personalized gift bag on July 8. The family’s social media post about it also got a lot of positive buzz, with more than 570 reactions on a local community Facebook page.

Fry said they went into a superstore to find the items they wanted and spoke to the manager there. The store asked for a photo, which was then sent to head office, who then sent a gift of a set of sweatpants and a custom hoodie for JT.

“It was a surprise,” Fry said. “They handed it to him (JT) … He appreciated it.”

Many Newmarket residents complimented the party concept on social media.

“The party looks amazing. You are so creative,” said one local on Facebook. “And what a great bonus to hear from Loblaws and get a gift.”

The family is known for their Christmas in July celebrations, though Fry said they didn’t run this year because their decorations had worn off.

Fry said he appreciated Loblaws’ gesture.

“Very lovely, honestly,” she said. “With all the bad news going on in the world, it’s nice to have something to show that companies are trying.

“It was all just for fun, we didn’t expect anything out of it,” added Fry. “It was all just for fun and to bring a little joy to people.”
