Pay and display parking machines on the street are off – Newsroom

The council is cutting its street-level payment and display machines because they run on the 3G mobile phone network, which is down across the country, making them increasingly expensive to maintain and replace.

The phase-out schedule means that all on-street payment and display machines in chargeable premises have now been switched off. Residents and visitors will need to use RingGo. Following this shutdown, the council will deploy mobile parking in shared car parks and free car parks in district and local centres.

The RingGo parking app is a convenient way for most residents and visitors to pay for parking. The app can be used for free on both Apple and Android devices. Where free parking charges apply, they will still be available via the app.

The council understands that change can be difficult and in an effort to make the transition to mobile pay parking as easy as possible, we have introduced a five minute grace period to allow time for parking sessions to be organised.

Using RingGo will also reduce the ability to meter fuel and may provide a discount on parking charges depending on the vehicle’s emissions.

Other than the parker’s name and vehicle registration, personal information such as card details must not be stored in the app. Although the council does not charge for using RingGo, some default settings may mean you pay a small fee to RingGo for reminders. These notifications can be easily turned off in the app settings.

For residents or visitors who do not have a smartphone, parking sessions can also be booked over the phone by calling 020 3046 0010. Residents who prefer to pay by cash or card can pay at any store that offers PayPoint. When using PayPoint, there is no need to return to the vehicle as the session will start automatically.

“While pay and display parking meters are being shut down, we are making every effort to ensure that the transition to mobile pay parking is as smooth as possible.

“We have listened to the issues raised by the pilot schemes and are looking to reduce the impact of the change where possible. As a result, a PayPoint option for those who prefer to pay by cash or card may be available at any store that offers PayPoint.

“Mobile payment for parking should make the system easier and more convenient for residents and visitors to use.”
