Leeds Rhinos’ recruitment position with club “aware” of transfer options

Ian Blease has suggested that Leeds Rhinos are unlikely to dip into the recruitment market ahead of the transfer deadline. Clubs will be unable to complete any further business beyond Friday, August 2nd, leaving them with just over a fortnight to secure any further additions to their squad for the remainder of the season.

Leeds, who are looking to chase down the clubs currently in the play-offs, are going through something of an injury crisis at present, which has seen them recently make loan additions to their squad. Sam Eseh is currently at the club from Wigan Warriors while Matty Russell has also had a spell at Headingley.

It has resulted in suggestions they could dip their toe into the market again, with that talk escalating after new head coach Brad Arthur admitted to receiving interest from players about potentially joining him at the club.

However, the club has no quota spots, and with salary cap space limited, the Rhinos’ Sporting Director believes it is unlikely that Leeds will do any further business.

“In terms of injuries, it means we’re aware of the market and where we can strengthen,” Blease said. “But we have a good youth system which we will probably lean on before going into the market, and also, there isn’t a great deal available.

“We have to trust our youth, we had McCormack and Edgell last week and we look forward to seeing how our young players embrace opportunities when they arrive.”

Leeds have recalled two long-term absentees, James Donaldson and James Bentley, this week, while Harry Newman has made a return after a short absence due to a foot injury.
