As the singers sing along Birmingham Street as the GMB presenter says ‘bloomin love this’

This is the moment a group of barbershop singers burst into impromptu song as they crowd the edge of a busy Birmingham street. The hilarious footage, taken in Kings Heath at the weekend, has gone viral and even caught the attention of an ITV Good Morning Britain news presenter.

Local resident Tom Carroll filmed the footage of the four singers outside Schooners Cafe in York Road. They brought smiles as they sang “Hello Mary-Lou,” which was once performed by Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.

Sharing X, Good Morning Britain news presenter Marverine Cole was quick to respond, adding: “Bloomin love this”.

Tom commented: “Kings Heath, I wasn’t expecting a quartet of barbers. Never change. Really impressed, it cheered us all up massively.”

“Kings Heath owns the Freshmen Four,” said The Village, calling the show “brilliant”.

One of the singers – Kings Norton’s David Eden-Sangwell – was stunned to see it being shared online as the post went viral.

David explained that it was the first public performance for him and his friends, who had formed a new barbershop quartet called 404 and were rehearsing outside for the first time ahead of a national competition.

David can be seen in the video above with Kings Heath’s Guy William, Kings Norton’s Victor Wong and Stourbridge’s David Morris.

He said: “We’re heading to Harrogate for a barbershop convention over the May bank holiday against 1,500 other people, so we wanted to practice outside and get experience of performing in front of people.

“For our first public performance, we had a great reaction. We’ve been moving around the high street of Kings Heath as we’re always conscious that we don’t play barbershop songs to people and we don’t want to upset anyone.

“We cheered a lot and it felt really good to later see a video of us being shared online and such nice comments.”

David has been singing barbershop songs for 15 years and is part of the West Midlands Anvil Chorus with Victor and Guy. Harmony Hair Shop Club meets at Beacon Church in Pheasey, Sutton Coldfield.

They have now been joined by David Morris, who performs with Shropshire group the Telfordaires, for the upcoming contest.

There will be further chances to catch the singers around town as they are planning a trip to perform in Birmingham city center in the coming weeks as well.

David added that the Anvil Chorus welcomes newcomers to barbering by singing. “It keeps people active, happy and very social,” he said.
