Detectives described his crimes as particularly brutal and praised his victim’s courage in reporting them.

Leeds Crown Court heard that Sykes instigated a violent attack on the woman in an incident in Huddersfield on July 19, 2023, and repeatedly punched and kicked her.

The victim required hospital treatment for serious injuries, including broken ribs.

She made a police report, which led to Sykes being quickly tracked down and arrested.

He was charged to appear before magistrates on July 22, 2023.

DC Eleanor Radley of Kirklees District Adult Safeguarding Team, who led the investigation, said: “Eugene Sykes carried out a sustained, brutal attack on a vulnerable female victim and we are delighted to see him brought to justice.
“The violence this strong, well-built man used against a physically much weaker victim was appalling and speaks volumes for his cowardice, as does his attempt to avoid blame for what he did.
“By comparison, his victim has shown real courage both in reporting him and in working with the police and the CPS over the last 12 months to force him to account for this very serious offence.
“I hope he can take solace in seeing him convicted and knowing he’s behind bars.”
