Starving German Shepherds rescued from malaise in Birmingham

Two German Shepherds, Buffy and Tia, recover after being found in a harrowing condition – trapped in a tiny cage under a bush, emaciated and living in squalor. The two, believed to be sisters, were abused and let down in Birmingham.

The one-year-old canines were rescued after they were discovered starving and piled in a mess, with the RSPCA stepping in to save them from this neglectful situation. Buffy’s weight dropped to just 17.5 kg.

Buffy and Tia spent eight weeks at Cotswolds Dogs & Cats Home after a three-week hospital stay, although it is not known how long they suffered in the cage.

The RSPCA inspector, horrified by their condition and excessively long nails, was determined to save them. Kate, as she is known, expressed her shock: “They took them out of their cage and I could see how thin they were and the fact that they thought it would be acceptable to leave them in this cage, I just thought: I’m not leaving these dogs here.”

She added with relief: “And now knowing that I’m with Cotswolds Dogs & Cats Home and getting all the love and care they need makes me so happy.”

Now in the care of Cotswolds Dogs & Cats Home in Gloucestershire, Buffy and Tia are making strides towards recovery. Tia received dedicated attention from an animal care assistant who said: “I have had the absolute pleasure of being Tia’s main carer. Seeing her go from being so anxious and stressed to the cheeky, confident, loving and crazy dog she is now has been my greatest pleasure.”

“She is truly the best partner. She will be the perfect companion for anyone,” she added. Buffy was diagnosed with hip dysplasia following an x-ray and is now undergoing hydrotherapy and receiving constant pain relief. He currently weighs 25.1 kg.
