Can I get a refund for a delayed TFL journey? Train delay refund explained

Businesses around the world were hit by a significant IT outage on Friday (19 July) due to an upgrade from cyber security company CrowdStrike, which affected trains, flights and much more.

Around half of Great Northern and Thameslink trains via Barnet, Enfield and Haringey, all of which are part of the Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), have been canceled since this morning.

While Greater Anglia reports that several of its stations are affected, there was no indication that trains on the West Anglia route via Tottenham and East Enfield were experiencing delays. London Overground and London Underground both appear to be unaffected.

GTR said in a statement: “We are currently experiencing widespread IT issues across our network. Our IT teams are actively investigating to determine the root cause of the issue. We are unable to access driver charts in some locations, leading to potential cancellations at short notice, particularly on the Thameslink and Great Northern networks. In addition, other key systems are affected, including our real-time customer information platforms.

“We will provide further updates when we can. In the meantime, please check your travel regularly before you travel.”

George Kurtz, president of CrowdStrike, said in a post on X that a “flaw found in a single content update for Windows hosts” was at the root of the problem. He said: “This is not a security incident or a cyber attack. The problem was identified, isolated and a solution implemented.”

Customers may not realize that it is possible to get cash back for Transport for London journeys – including Tube and Overground delays.

Can I claim a refund after a delay on Transport for London services?

But there is a strict criterion for what counts and what does not constitute a valid reason for making a claim.

TfL rules you can’t claim if the delay is due to factors outside its control, including strikes, security alerts, bad weather, customer incidents and engineering work.

It does not explicitly list “swans on the line”, but this is also believed to be implied. Birds are protected by the monarchy but cannot be controlled by TfL, you’d be horrified to learn.

On Monday, there was a major disruption due to a casualty on the tracks, but this is the type of incident that would leave customers unable to claim compensation.

But if your delay is deemed to be TfL’s own fault, you can make a claim. Read on to find out how.

If your claim is accepted, you will be reimbursed the value of a one-time pay-as-you-go for the delayed journey.

If you used pay-as-you-go or a Travelcard on Oyster, refunds are given as a pay-as-you-go credit or by transfer to your bank account.
If you used a Travelcard on Oyster or a National Rail smartcard, the one-off pay-as-you-go fare is refunded for the delayed journey.
If you used a contactless method, refunds are given on the card used.
If you used a paper ticket or a National Rail smartcard, refunds are made by transfer to your bank account.

You can also request a refund if you touched the wrong card or failed to enter or quit.

What happens if your application is unsuccessful?

If your claim is unsuccessful, you can appeal by calling 0343 222 1234.

The line is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
