Tributes have been paid to an “exceptionally kind lady” who lost her life in a crash in Co Meath on Wednesday.

She was the driver of one of two cars involved in a collision at the junction of Johnstown Road and the R148 at around 2.15pm on Wednesday 17 July.

The victim, who has been named locally as Annmaire Cooney (85) of Glen Abhainn, Enfield, Co Meath, died on Wednesday night at Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown.

The mother-of-five, who was originally from Palmerstown in Dublin, only recently lost her brother Michael after he died suddenly in April.

Locals described Anne Marie as an exceptionally kind woman who was an active and popular member of the Jordanstown local choir and the Enfield knitting group.

Mrs Cooney, who was predeceased by her husband Stephen, is survived by her children Yvonne, Fiona, Antoine, Ger & Shane. Anne Marie’s funeral Mass will be celebrated in the Church of the Assumption, Enfield, on Monday at 11am, followed by cremation in Newlands Crematorium at 1.30pm.

The driver of the second vehicle was also taken there for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to this collision to come forward.

They said “any road users who may have dash cam footage (including dashcam) and were traveling in the area at the time are asked to make this footage available to gardaí”.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Trim Garda Station on 046 948 6140, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

“These road deaths bring the number of people who have died on Irish roads this year to 110, an increase of 16 on the same period last year. Last year, 184 people were killed on Irish roads, up almost 20% in a year and 33% higher than before the pandemic.”
