Cyclist dies on edge of Dartmoor after crash

A cyclist has died after suffering serious head injuries during a crash on Dartmoor. The 56-year-old man was found at around 3.40pm on Sunday 12 May on Shapley Common, near Moretonhampstead, by search and rescue teams who contacted Devon Air Ambulance and South West Ambulance Service.

Devon and Cornwall Police were also called to the incident and a spokesman confirmed there had been an accident involving a cyclist on the B3212. A 56-year-old man was found a step away.




Despite receiving medical attention, he was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

A police spokesman said: “Police were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving a bicycle on the B3212 on Shapley Common, near North Bovey, Moretonhampstead, at around 3.40pm on Sunday 12 May. South West Ambulance Service, Devon Air Ambulance and Devon and Cornwall Police attended the incident.

“A 56-year-old male cyclist was located in the doorway. Despite the efforts of those present, he was later pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed. The B3212 between Challacombe Cross and Jurston Cross has been closed. while the police investigated this collision The road was reopened at around 19.20”.

Posting on social media, Dartmoor Search and Rescue Ashburton said: “It was the 62nd Ten Tors event this year and once again our volunteers and those from the other 3 Dartmoor Search and Rescue teams, Devon 4×4 and other organizations have been heavily involved in supporting the programme.
