Which stations are missing as new lines are to be covered

Transport for London (TfL) has said that several sections of the tube tunnel will receive 4G and 5G coverage before the end of the summer. But much of the network will still remain without connectivity, as nearly two-thirds of stations with underground platforms are still black spots.

Documents for TfL’s next board meeting next week state: “Further sections with tunnels to Whitechapel, Canary Wharf and Woolwich will be connected over the summer, relying on all stations on the Elizabeth line which will get mobile coverage early this year.

“Customers can now receive a mobile signal on the underground section of the Central line between Holland Park and Bank and on both underground sections of the Edgware and High Barnet branches of the Northern line south to Tottenham Court Road, along with the Jubilee line. 4G coverage between Westminster and Canning Town Gateway This means that from May 2024, around 37% of Tube stations with underground platforms have a mobile service available.

Hyde Park Corner, Piccadilly Circus and Russell Square stations on the Piccadilly line have “recently started” to receive coverage. say the bosses. TfL expects “additional sections” of the Northern, Bakerloo, Piccadilly and Victoria lines to be operational “over the next month”.

On the Elizabeth line, after delivering 4G coverage to all stations on the Elizabeth line in May, TfL says it is “making progress” on adding tunnels. Officials say: “We have now provided 4G and 5G coverage in the central section tunnels between Paddington and Liverpool Street, and further sections to Whitechapel will be connected in the coming weeks.

“The entire Elizabeth line will have mobile coverage by the end of the summer.”

Which stations are already covered?

Across London, 38 Tube stations now offer mobile coverage to customers in ticket halls, platform areas and junctions, with many more, including the southern end of the Northern line, expected to be operational by the end of the summer. But this is only about 30% of the subway stations that are underground.

When combined with above-ground subway stations, officials note that this means nearly 70 percent of all stations on the subway network now have mobile coverage. TfL said last month that the tunnelled section between Piccadilly Circus and Hyde Park Corner stations on the Piccadilly line would also open “in the coming weeks”.

Coverage will also begin on the Bakerloo line “later this summer”. The documents also said the southern end of the northern line from Stockwell to Morden would “commence to have mobile coverage soon”, with 4G and 5G coverage available at Clapham Common station.
