Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl inquired about Ian Poveda most recently

Sheffield Wednesday have been linked with a move to bring former loanee Ian Poveda back to Hillsborough.

In the January transfer window during the 2023/24 Championship campaign, Danny Rohl managed to completely turn the tide of the season with shrewd business in terms of loan signings.

Not all of them played up to their abilities, such as Kristian Pederson, who could not solidify a spot in the starting lineup, however, the likes of James Beadle and Ike Ugbo performed well beyond their expectations.

Beadle has already rejoined in S6 on a season-long loan following a half-season spell last season where he was crucial in keeping the Owls in the Championship, especially with the two clean sheets in the final two games of the campaign. .

Sheffield Wednesday remain interested in bringing Ugbo back to Hillsborough, but so far a deal has not progressed.

However, Rohl has issued an update on his pursuit of former Sheffield Wednesday loanee Ian Poveda, one that has remained quiet in recent weeks.

Danny Rohl is ‘looking for solutions’ in his pursuit of former Sheffield Wednesday loanee Ian Poveda

Poveda is currently a free agent after his contract at Leeds United expired this summer.

He spent the second half of the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, making quite an impression in his few games played despite not finding the back of the net.

When asked if Sheffield Wednesday were still pursuing a deal for Poveda, Rohl told The Star: “We can’t do every deal straight away because the player wants this, this or that.

“We have some principles, we have to, but we are looking for solutions and that is always part of the business. Sometimes it goes faster, sometimes it takes more time.

“We had some crucial players last season in the second half who improved our team, but we also brought some good players from outside into our team and that’s a good balance, a good mix. We will continue.”

Danny Rohl’s transfer record may offer Sheffield Wednesday fans a glimmer of hope

It is clear that new arrivals praise Rohl’s work when signing for Sheffield Wednesday, such as Jamal Lowe, who had an hour-long chat with the German boss before signing.

Current players who signed new contracts also credited Rohl for being the reason they extended their stay in S6, such as Josh Windass.

With Sheffield Wednesday unlikely to be involved in a relegation dogfight in 2024/25, former players are more than happy to ply their trade at Hillsborough as it is clear the club has developed massively over the last six months.

Poveda thrived in the few games he had under Rohl before injuries affected the end of his season and will be aware that the German coach can give him the confidence to play at the top.

Rohl has handled the transfer window spectacularly so far this season and it wouldn’t be surprising if Sheffield Wednesday were able to follow the example of their previous additions and bring Poveda through the doors despite the continued need to ‘find solutions’ .
