Eric Cantona says Manchester United have a £46.6m player who continues to surprise him

Eric Cantona believes “no one” at Manchester United excites him as much as Lamine Yamal, but at least one often surprises him.

It was the summer of Spain and Lamine Yamal in particular as the Barcelona starlet inspired his country to their Euro 2024 triumph.

Turning 17 the day before the final win over England, Yamal was stunning during the tournament, scoring once and setting up four more.

The teenager’s solitary strike was an incredible effort from distance in the win over France and earned him the Goal of the Tournament award to go alongside his Young Player of the Tournament award.

Yamal will no doubt light up La Liga, the Champions League and international tournaments for years to come and you can be sure Eric Cantona will be watching.

The Manchester United legend has expressed his adoration for such a spontaneous player, one that only Bruno Fernandes comes close to matching at Old Trafford.

Eric Cantona praises Bruno Fernandes

Speaking in an interview with The Athletic, Cantona was effusive in his praise for Yamal: “I like the way Spain play and it’s good to have that kind of player because you never know what he’s going to do.

“He surprises everyone every time. He has great vision, great technique and makes the right decision.

“I love it. Sometimes I watch a game just to watch a player.”

When asked who his favorite United player is in the current squad, the Frenchman replied: “They have some good players, some great players of course. But no one I would say is like Yamal.

“I like players who surprise me. Sometimes Bruno Fernandes surprises me. Which is good.”

Man United need better strikers

It’s hardly surprising that Cantona isn’t left in a complete state of awe by any of United’s current forwards, given that they ended their worst season in the Premier League with a negative goal difference last season.

Erik ten Hag’s side have managed just 57 league goals, joint worst in the top 10 alongside Crystal Palace – a side who were relegation candidates in the first half of the campaign.

Too many strikers performed poorly. Antony was awful, Marcus Rashford suffered another terrible lapse in form, Rasmus Hojlund struggled to find his feet apart from a hot streak and Jadon Sancho was sent off.

Of the team’s forwards, only Fernandes and £46.6million youngster Alejandro Garnacho can hold their heads high knowing they have contributed their best to the cause.

Everyone else really needs to up their game next season if United are to climb back up the table and another addition is needed alongside the signing of Joshua Zirkzee.
