Drivers who took a speed awareness course said ‘car insurance is invalid’

Drivers who have previously taken a speed awareness course could be paying too much for their car insurance. Motorists are being warned of potentially high insurance costs due to ‘bad driving behaviour’, with millions potentially affected.

In 2022, nearly 1.5 million drivers completed a national speed awareness course and another 168,000 attended a national highway awareness course. Mark Tongue, joint CEO and founder of Select Car Leasing, issued a warning: “The reality is that some insurers may consider the need to attend such a course as an indication of poor driving behaviour, which could mean that they charge slightly higher premiums, despite the fact that the driver has no official criminal record.”

He emphasized the importance of honesty when it comes to insurance policies, stating: “It is essential that you understand the legal and contractual consequences of non-disclosure. If your insurer specifically asks if you’ve attended a speed awareness course and you don’t provide the correct information, they could cancel your policy.”

Mr Tongue advised: “If you are unsure whether you need to disclose your attendance at a speed awareness course, it is always best to answer any questions honestly to ensure that any insurance you have remains in place valid and that you do not make mistakes. of the law”.

“Each insurer will operate in different ways, so it’s probably important to do your research if you’ve taken a speed awareness course before choosing a particular provider,” reports Birmingham Live.

Mr Tongue also urged drivers to be honest with their insurance providers about previous speed awareness courses. Drivers caught speeding may be given the option of attending a speed awareness course instead of receiving points or a fine.

However, Mr Tongue stressed the importance of honesty when dealing with insurers, advising drivers to be “100 per cent honest” if asked if they have taken or are about to take such a course.
