Disabled couple in their 70s hit with ‘overnight’ parking fine they never did

A disabled Leicestershire couple in their 70s said they were ‘disgusted’ after being slapped with a £100 parking fine for leaving their car overnight in a car park – despite only being there for “minutes”.

John Shroff, 74, and his wife Susan, 73, from Hamilton, Leicester, said they were shocked to receive the penalty notice from parking firm ParkMaven, accusing them of parking more than 23 hours in a car park in front of a pharmacy and Sainsbury’s supermarket. in Sandhills Avenue in their neighborhood.

“It’s absurd,” Mr Shroff told LeicestershireLive. “I went to the pharmacy twice in two days to get a prescription, staying less than 10 minutes each time. We certainly wouldn’t have left the car there and gone home – my wife is registered disabled and I use a cane”.

The couple, who have 17 grandchildren and have lived in the area for 15 years, claimed they made several calls to ParkMaven about the issue but were “ignored”.

Mr Shroff, a former security worker with a background in customer service, said: “The handling of our complaint was appalling. They have shown no understanding or willingness to investigate properly.”

Grandfather Hamilton vows to fight a £100 fine he says is unfair.

He said he believes his was not an isolated incident. “Others in our area have faced similar unfair fines,” he claimed, saying he was aware of “many complaints” from other people who used the car park. “It seems this company is just sending fines without proper checks. It’s disgusting”.

Mr Shroff said he refused to pay the fine and was not afraid to stand his ground. “I wouldn’t pay it,” he said. “Let them take me to court. If a bailiff tried to break into my house, they’d have a bit of a problem. I’m 74, but I know how to deal with people like that.”
