Former Leeds Rhinos star Blake Austin says Super League is full of ‘silly big forwards’

Former Warrington Wolves and Leeds Rhinos defender Blake Austin has opened up about the gap between Super League and the NRL.

Before moving to Super League ahead of the 2019 season with Warrington, the Parramatta native made over 100 NRL appearances for Penrith Panthers, Wests Tigers and most notably Canberra Raiders, for whom he scored 34 tries in 88 games Games.

He also made one appearance for England in 2019, as well as two appearances for Great Britain on their tour of the southern hemisphere.

Speaking on former St Helens man James Graham’s The Bye Round podcast, he was asked how the game was different in the two leagues.

He said: “It’s a tougher brand of footy (in England). The weather lends itself to this.

“I think it’s a bolder game, but you can’t count on anything happening there either.

“Super League, you know exactly what they’re going to do and you know exactly how to counter it.”

Austin then went further, highlighting a difference in mindset between the leagues.

He said: “No offence, James, but (there are) big, bad forwards all over the place who, you know, will come in from an angle, where in the NRL, the game is so fast it’s hard to hurt anybody. .

“Your thoughts are consumed with doing your job, keeping your role.

“In Super League, they’d rather win a game 40-38 than 6-0. They want excitement, that’s what they want.

“People always ask ‘what’s the difference’ – it’s bloody hard, man. It’s a tough leg.”

Austin had the most prolific period of his career at Warrington Wolves at the start of his Super League spell, scoring 33 tries in 67 appearances: almost exactly one every two games.

However, he struggled later on in his time with Leeds Rhinos and Castleford Tigers.

Austin now plays for The Entrance Tigers in Australia’s Central Coast Division Rugby League.
