Keeping plants alive, whether in the garden or indoors, can often be a difficult task.

Have you ever wondered which plants can survive the longest without water? When it comes to holidays, they should be stress-free and a time to forget all your worries. There is nothing like the feeling of stepping off the plane and being greeted by warm weather.

However, it is essential to make sure everything at home is in order before you leave. One thing we often overlook are our plants. Ted Bromley-Hall, a gardening expert at IBRAN, has teamed up with Tombola to share some tips on what to do before you hit the road. Specifically, he discusses which plants can survive without frequent watering, Express reports.

Bromley-Hall explained: “Many houseplants struggle when you’re on holiday if they’re left untended, and the biggest reason for this is lack of water. Monstera Deliciosa, also known as the “cheese plant”, is a popular option that originates in the central American jungle, where it climbs other trees and occupies shadier, wetter places.

“They are high maintenance because they are not well adapted to drought conditions, so they need watering once or twice a week. That being said, they can’t handle being in water either. They should be kept in semi-shaded places with dappled light indoors.”

Meanwhile, other popular plants such as Bird of Paradise, a staple for those who have relaxed in the Canary Islands sun, can handle a little neglect, only needing a drink when the soil is thirsty. The expert said: “These plants need bright sun, moisture and warmth.

“For this reason, they are good houseplants to keep and can be left for a week or so while you are on holiday.” For potted herbs like lavender and rosemary, they are perfect for pots and are “extremely drought tolerant,” making them top choices for frequent travelers.

He continued: “They require watering and feeding infrequently and can be left unattended when away for short periods. They also smell incredibly good and help clean the air in your home without being overpowering.”
