The ex-Liverpool man makes his Sheffield Wednesday prediction

Former Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders has made a prediction about Sheffield Wednesday ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Lijnders is the current head coach of Red Bull Salzburg and was speaking to the Sheffield paper the star after his side faced the Owls in a pre-season friendly.

What did Pep Lijnders say?

Speaking to the newspaper, the Salzburg boss said: “We always saw that if we wanted to play a good game we had to respect what they were doing, a really good strength for them was their double six and how they got behind our striker with one always free and how they wanted to combines. .

“The second was their corners, although they didn’t have many, I don’t think. The third was their counterattack. They left strikers up there and one always up there. It was a clear idea and I think if they really play like that, they won’t leave it for the last game in the championship.”

In the quotes he provided to him the star journalist Alex Miller, Jurgen Klopp’s former assistant praised the Steel City outfit that made the trip to Austria.

Sheffield Wednesday prepare for Championship season:

Danny Rohl’s side escaped relegation on the final day of last season after the German guided a resurgent Sheffield Wednesday to the climax of the campaign. The Owls won 2-0 at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light to ensure they extended their stay in the second leg.

Expectations are higher for next season, with Wednesday having groomed a talented squad through their off-field dealings this summer.

The Championship side have added eight new signings to their squad, while also sealing the loan return of Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper James Beadle and contract extensions for stars such as Barry Bannan and Josh Windass.

Positive signs for owls – Opinion:

The words of Lijnders, a highly thought-out manager, are a strong endorsement of the work Sheffield Wednesday have put in this summer. He clearly sees no reason for the Hillsborough faithful to worry about being locked in a battle at the wrong end of the table in the upcoming campaign.

Despite the 4-0 defeat and thus the obvious gulf in class between the Championship side and one of last season’s Champions League participants, Lijnders was seemingly impressed by the opposition his side faced.

The Owls are in a positive place ahead of the 2024/25 term, adding real quality to a core of players signed and retained. There’s a reason Danny Rohl is so often lauded and he could be the reason Sheffield Wednesday climb up the Championship table this time around.
