Mother lands in Majorca as concern grows for missing son Benjamin Ross

The mother of missing man Benjamin Ross has landed in Mallorca to begin a desperate search for her son, who has not been heard from since July 10.

The 26-year-old barrister, from Golborne in Wigan, traveled to the Spanish island for a dream break in June to visit a friend, before extending his stay and finding temporary accommodation.

He was staying in Palma, the capital of the popular holiday destination – but has not been heard from for nearly two weeks after cutting off contact with his heartbroken mother Felix.

After reporting him missing to Greater Manchester Police and the Foreign Office, Felix flew to Mallorca to begin a door-to-door and ground-based search for her son, landing on the Spanish island on Saturday ( July 20).

Felix, who was left “horrified” by her son’s sudden and “out of character” disappearance, is now to meet the British consulate to find out what efforts police are making to trace him, her friend Carla Speight confirmed.

And a GoFundMe page has also been set up to support Felix with the costs of accommodation, flights and food during his stay in Mallorca. The costs were described by Carla as “astronomical” as it is the peak summer holiday season.

She said: “Felix will put every penny she has into finding her son, we know with the astronomical costs she won’t be eating or drinking properly. As a single parent, I know I wouldn’t eat or drink and instead put that money into printing posters to teach or putting gas in a rental car.”

The local police in Mallorca have since confirmed that they have been informed of Ben’s disappearance. A statement from Mallorca National Police said: “We are aware of this disappearance and work is being done to find this man. That’s all we can say at this point.”

Her son told Felix that he had planned to go see his friends to take a break from the stress of trying to secure the next steps of his law practice.

Assuming he meant a friend who lived locally, Felix wished him well and told him to keep in touch. Weeks later, she found out that Ben, who likes to travel and decided to extend his trip and find a temporary job, had all his belongings stolen, including his wallet, phone and keys, while swim at the beach.

He later cut off contact with Felix, which she says left her worried about his mental state. She has not been able to contact Ben since July 10th.

The grieving mother described the past week as “torture” and said she was “out of her mind with worry” in a previous interview with Manchester Evening News.

The bereaved mother reported Ben missing to Greater Manchester Police on July 13. The force is now supporting the family in making a report to Interpol, so that the Foreign Office can start investigating with the Spanish police.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said Manchester Evening News: “On Saturday 13 July 2024 we received a report that a 26-year-old man from Wigan had traveled to Spain and had cut off contact with his friends and family.

“I advised them that they should contact the British Consulate, who will be able to assist them in looking for their loved one abroad.

“Yesterday (Wednesday 17 July 2024), we assisted the family in submitting a report to Interpol to allow the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to act on their behalf in Spain.”

A spokesman for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: “We are supporting the family of a British man reported missing in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.”
