Giles Coke names a Sheffield Wednesday gem who “deserves a lot of credit” this season

Giles Coke has praised a Sheffield Wednesday star who “deserves a lot of credit”.

Sheffield Wednesday have been full of praise in recent weeks, enjoying a six-match unbeaten run to avoid relegation from the Championship.

Despite spending most of the campaign in the bottom three, the Owls secured survival with a 2-0 win over Sunderland on the final day.

Danny Rohl was hailed for his impact on the team’s performances, while Josh Windass was another who scored in three games on the bounce to help them survive.

However, former Wednesday midfielder Giles Coke believes a player who has struggled for game time should be given more “credit”.

Bailey Cadamarteri “did incredibly well”

Speaking to The Star, Coke said: “Bailey (Cadamarteri) has done incredibly well, he’s come into a very difficult situation, the club is not doing well at all. For him to come into a team with confidence as a youngster and do what he did, score some important goals, he deserves a lot of credit.

“It gives a big message to the youth team, if they can see that then there’s no reason why they can’t do the same.”

Bailey Cadamarteri was promoted to the senior team just a month after Danny Rohl’s arrival and scored three goals in his first five starts.

The 19-year-old’s playing time has dropped rapidly following the arrival of Ike Ugbo, as he has managed just two starts in his last 14 games.

However, Cadamarteri scored in March’s 1-1 draw with Swansea City – his fourth and final goal of the season.

The teenager progresses at the perfect pace

The teenager was never meant to be Wednesday’s first-choice striker this season and the club had been warned not to put too much pressure on him.

Ugbo’s impact has been a blessing in disguise for Cadamarteri as it has meant he has been given his own time to settle into the senior squad and can now prepare for a full pre-season and campaign under Rohl.

The forward’s first-team future will depend on who the Owls bring in this summer, while the club should look to send him out on loan if his minutes look even bleaker.

However, Cadamarteri has shown his potential this term and shows great promise for Wednesday’s future – regardless of the league he finds himself in.
