Leeds United Eye move for top defender

Leeds United have made early contact with PEC Zwolle defender Anselmo Garcia in a bid to bring the 21-year-old to Elland Road this summer, according to a report from Football Insider.

Daniel Farke has already had a busy summer as his side go through something of a rebuild. The transfer window began with fears that most of the star assets in the squad would have to be sold to comply with the Profitability and Sustainability Rules. While the situation wasn’t as bad as many fans had feared, outings have not been uncommon over the past month.

Archie Gray, who left for Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, is undoubtedly the most outstanding of the players so far, but he is not alone, five other stars have left with permanent deals since the window opened in June.

The flow of exits doesn’t seem to be stopping though, with Wilfried Gnonto and Junior Firpo the next duo rumored to be out the door. While replacements will be needed all over the pitch, the loss of the latter could worry some supporters of the Yorkshire outfit as there would now be a dearth of options in that area of the pitch.

The hierarchy therefore appear to have identified the ideal replacement for the Dominican Republic international.

After starting out in the youth ranks of Real Betis and Wolfsburg, 21-year-old Garcia made his professional debut when he joined then-Dutch second division side NAC Breda in 2022. After spent one season at Stadion Rat Verlegh, the left-back joined top club PEC Zwolle.

In a successful campaign, the Ireland youth international made over 30 appearances, contributing four goals. However, it is his defensive solidity that has impressed Farke and his staff as they look to go a step further than they did last time out.

The writer’s vision

Leeds are certainly in the midst of a transfer window as they look to shed a number of their Premier League signings and replace them with fresh, younger talent in order to return them to the top flight.

This deal could be another step in that direction. After impressing in the Eredivisie last season, it’s no wonder English clubs are considering a move for the youngster. With the new project at Elland Road, this would be a smart deal for both club and player.
