“Worst day ever” – Daryl Powell on what just happened to Wakefield Trinity

Wakefield Trinity lost their first game of the Championship season on Saturday night in what Daryl Powell has now called “the club’s worst day at the office for a long time”.

Toulouse Olympique became the first side since Featherstone Rovers in March to beat Wakefield Trinity with Powell’s side on a 17-match winning streak since that Challenge Cup defeat.

The French side thrashed Trin 32-4, the win lifting them above Sheffield Eagles, making it a tight race for second, third and fourth behind leaders Trinity.

Wakefield Trinity are still seven points adrift and of course with IMG it’s not all about winning the Grand Final this year, but that didn’t stop Daryl Powell expressing his disappointment at the heavy defeat.

Two days after the defeat, the former Warrington boss reacted to the defeat and expressed what it means to lose hope of an ‘Invincible’ season.

Speaking in a video shared by Wakefield Trinity on their YouTube channel, Powell recalled the disappointment as he bemoaned careless errors in their defeat at the Stade Ernest-Wallon on Saturday.

“I’m quite disappointed,” he explained. “I followed him on the plane, on the way back. There were quite a few things that were not like us. I thought defensively, we were really poor.

“We still felt at half-time that we could get back into the game and we showed signs early after the break, but then we started making errors again. I thought they completely outplayed us.”

On what went wrong, Powell noted: “We made 12 errors and they only made six and in conditions like this, it really hurt us as a team.

“It was our worst day at the office for a long time and we have to use it as a springboard now for what we do next, which is obviously the most important thing when you lose a game.”

With such a clear lead at the top of the championship and only ten rounds to go, it is still very likely that they will top the table and make a Grand Final charge that will secure them yet more IMG points, but Powell has left to wander. missed chance to go undefeated.

“We haven’t lost for a long time and although we would have liked to go unbeaten in the league, that’s gone now and we have to focus on what we do next.”

They will continue their campaign next week when they face Featherstone Rovers, the last team to beat them before Toulouse, with Fev ending Trinity’s Challenge Cup hopes in the golden point in March.
