Arthur ‘Gaps’ Hendrickson’s funeral live as Coventry mourns The Selecter frontman

Coventry is preparing to say goodbye to a pioneering musician today. The funeral of Arthur ‘Gaps’ Hendrickson, frontman of Coventry ska band The Selecter, takes place later today.

Sadly, he died at his home in Coventry on June 11 of cancer, aged 73. Mourners from across the city and further afield are set to gather at Coventry Cathedral for a special service for the musician.




Frontman The Selecter was at the heart of the ska and two-tone movement that catapulted Coventry into the limelight. Along with Pauline Black, he led The Selecter to become one of the most important bands in the two-tone movement, alongside The Specials.

Bandmate Pauline Black described her former bandmate as “extraordinary”, but he was also revered in the music industry. Many are set to pay their respects to the legendary face at the funeral later today.

Two-tone heroes

2-Tone Heroes Neville Staple, Pauline Black, Arthur “Gaps” Hendrickson, Roddy “Radiation” Byers.

He was part of The Selecter, who were among the two-tone heroes to come out of Coventry.

In fact, the band were one of the most successful ska acts of the two-tone era, scoring UK top 40 hits in the late 70s and 80s.

Among the biggest hits were “On My Radio” and “Three Minute Hero”.
