The Coventry family of seven had a lucky escape after a house fire caused by fumes

A family of seven from Coventry had a lucky escape during an early morning fire at their home. West Midlands Fire Service responded to 999 calls to reports of a fire at a terraced house in Newcombe Road, Chapelfields, just after 3am this morning (July 23).

A total of 13 firefighters in two fire engines and a 4×4 brigade response vehicle from Coventry and Canley fire stations attended the scene. They found a fire in the bedroom of a converted attic of the house.

Wearing breathing apparatus, they battled the flames with hose reels. The fire was confirmed to have been extinguished by 3.30am but was left with heavy smoke.

West Midlands Fire Service confirmed that the family of seven inside the property were not injured. “A large part of the property has been heavily damaged by smoke, as a result a family of seven will likely need to relocate,” a WMFS spokesman said.

The spokesman added: “The fire is believed to have been caused by a vaporizer’s lithium-ion battery being charged.” WMFS has previously issued warnings about lithium-ion batteries, especially if they are overcharged, short-circuited, submerged in water or damaged.
