Lambeth demonstrates its continued commitment to the Living Wage

Lambeth Council is progressing its commitment to becoming a Living Wage place as part of ongoing efforts to tackle inequality, ensure local people receive fair wages and ensure all working people in Lambeth are able to secure families and loved ones.

A living wage place is somewhere paying employees a living wage is the norm. In Lambeth, hundreds of employers have already signed up to the London Living Wage, which is an hourly wage rate currently set at £13.15.

It is independently calculated to reflect the high cost of living in the capital, giving a London worker and their family enough to afford the essentials and save.

The council has been working with local businesses, charities and community leaders since June as part of a Living Wage Action Group. The group has now created an action plan which is an essential first step towards making Lambeth a Living Wage place by 2025.

Word from the Cabinet

Cllr Marcia Cameron, Lambeth Cabinet Member for Economic Inclusion, said: “The Living Wage is so important in tackling poverty wages and also benefits businesses by helping to recruit staff, retain and increase customer confidence.

“We are now making good progress in taking the necessary steps to ensure that paying a living wage is a default for employers in Lambeth. Achieving this will make such a difference to so many people’s lives and help address the persistent low pay issues that many of our residents still face.”

Action plan

A Living Wage Action Plan includes a list of actions and commitments, sets targets for increasing the number of living wage employers and workers in the district and details the sectors and businesses that should be targeted as part of a campaigning approach to register them as accredited.
