Three people jailed in kidnapping case, Bradford

Tuesday 23 July 2024

Two men and a woman have been jailed for their part in a kidnapping in Bradford.

Zarie Jackson-Burchall, 27, of no fixed abode, and Shanikae Smith-Gardener 29, of Beaufort Street, Derby, were both found guilty of kidnapping and false imprisonment after a trial.

Jahrico Smith Gardener, 25, of no fixed abode, admitted blackmail, kidnapping and false imprisonment before trial.

Two other women were found not guilty following a trial.

It follows an incident in Bradford on 12 August 2022 where a third party report was made of a man being chased and assaulted on Lonsdale Street.

The police found that the victim had been forced into a vehicle. The vehicle was then driven to a Sheffield address on Popple Street where the man was held against his will and assaulted.

The suspects then called the victim’s family to demand money for her release.

Officers were able to locate the suspects and armed officers entered the address and secured the victim and made several arrests.

The victim suffered minor injuries.

On July 19, at Bradford Crown Court, the three defendants were sentenced to:

  • Zarie Jackson-Burchall, was jailed for 6 years and 8 months
  • Shanikae Smith-Gardener was sentenced to 5 years in prison
  • Jahrico Smith Gardener was sentenced to 5 years in prison

Detective Chief Inspector Sam Freeman of West Yorkshire Police said:

“We welcome the sentence in what has been a long ordeal for the victim.

“This was a serious offense and these three offenders put the victim in fear for his life, luckily he only suffered minor injuries.

“I hope this sentence will go some way to giving the victim some closure and justice.”
