‘Britain’s dirtiest brown flag beach’ sees visitors fined £100 by ‘Big Brother’

A beach in Cornwall which has been awarded a ‘Brown Flag’ for being one of the dirtiest in Britain is also plagued by parking problems, where visitors can be fined £100 by ‘Big Brother’ .

Porthluney beach has been marked as one of the dirtiest in Britain, despite Cornwall being the fourth highest English county for summer sea swimming.

The scathing award was awarded by UK tourism website Holiday Park Guru, which analyzed Environment Agency summer water quality data from hundreds of beaches up and down the country.

The 13 lucky recipients of the “Brown Flag” honor are also given a free flag displaying a poop emoji to place on their shores.

The beaches have been rated ‘poor’ by the Environment Agency due to bacteria such as e-coli being found in the water from sewage or other waste.

However, Porthluney beachgoers say the dirty conditions are not the only problem, with many complaining about the parking situation at the private bay.

Writing on TripAdvisor about her September 2023 trip, Sarah T said she would not be returning to Porthluney Beach after she used the car park to pay in cash and was subsequently fined.

She said: “After he left Cornwall I got a £100 parking ticket, he appealed it to no avail and of course I threw away my parking ticket so I have no proof. I will not be returning to this car park or beach after reading so many reviews about parking fines.”

The user criticized the parking situation for “ruining a holiday memory”.

A month earlier, John T also complained about his trip to the beach, calling the parking lot a “scam.”

He said on the popular review site: “We visited this beach one evening to watch a local band. When we got home, we found a parking ticket waiting for us. I appealed the fine and it was dismissed. Moral of the story is keep your parking ticket for a month or so because if you pay cash like I do, you have no way to prove what you paid.

“We won’t be visiting this beach again, which means we won’t be supporting the pop-up restaurants on site.”

User David added that greed had ‘ruined’ the once beautiful beach, writing: ‘Shame on the owners for being so greedy to ruin what was once a great place to visit for safe swimming and reasonable food.

“Not anymore from my recent experience of bad food, dirty beach and the hassle of trying to use a machine that makes you feel like Big Brother is watching your every move to fine you for even more money. Last visit to this part of town I feel!”

Another user slammed the “heartless, money grabbing private parking company” who “ruined a beautiful beach”, while a second warned others not to park there and said they would “not be back back to Cornwall as this place ruined the holiday as they were on a very tight budget’.

At the bottom of the list of counties with the dirtiest beaches was Lancashire, with none of its bathing spots achieving a three-star ‘excellent’ cleanliness rating.

Holiday Park Guru’s Robbie Lane said: “We’re hoping to make a real splash in the papers with the launch of England’s first ‘Brown Flag Awards’. Congratulations to our 13 winners this year – you really are among the best.

“We just hope they’ll take up our offer of a free brown flag, although I’m afraid we can’t afford to provide a mast as well. On a more positive note, high praise is due for the 273 beaches in England with the best rating for water quality – including 72 beaches in Cornwall.”
