Di’Shon Bernard explains why signing new Sheffield Wednesday deal was ‘an easy decision’

Di’Shon Bernard has started pre-season training with Sheffield Wednesday this week.

The defender has been absent for most of the summer after participating in the Copa America tournament with Jamaica.

The Reggae Boyz were knocked out in the group stages though, and Bernard returned to England as a free agent.

There was plenty of concern around the centre-back’s future at Sheffield Wednesday, until he put pen to paper on a contract extension last week.

After a turbulent couple of months, Bernard is now back with his teammates and has explained how Danny Rohl made his decision an ‘easy’ one.

Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield, Bernard said: “”Yeah, Danny would check up on me regularly to see how I was doing internationally. We had a few phone calls here and there and he would always keep in touch just to say how much he wants me, how much he appreciates my value. Having a manager like that, it was an easy decision really.”

When asked whether Rohl could take Wednesday back to the Premier League, he replied: “I think so, I think so. He’s really detailed in what he wants and I think that’s very clear and shows on the pitch. I think you can tell the difference from earlier last season and at the end of it, how different we’re playing… much better football, attacking football, scoring lots of goals.

“I think it’s what everyone wants to see, instead of coming to the stadium and watching the long ball and not really attacking football.”

Sheffield Wednesday are capable of reaching the play-offs

The Owls only managed to avoid relegation on the final day, but if the season had started when Rohl had arrived, things would have been very different.

Wednesday claimed 50 points from Rohl’s 35 games in charge, which would have put them in ninth place – six points below the play-off spots and a whopping 16 points from the relegation zone.

The German did that with many of the players who had come up from League One and pulled off some brilliant January business to help achieve survival.

Rohl has now made nine of his own signings, will have had a full pre-season with his team and has brought in a completely different feel to the club.

There is absolutely no reason why the 35-year-old can’t take Wednesday to the top flight, but whatever happens, fans will be expecting a much more enjoyable campaign than the previous one.
