Leicester City v Shrewsbury squad news with Jamie Vardy missing from 27-man squad

Jamie Vardy is missing from Leicester City’s Shrewsbury Town squad with Patson Daka leading the charge.

Vardy is the only absentee among the 24 players who played against Villarreal in City’s first pre-season friendly at the weekend. It is potentially a battle for number nine, with manager Steve Cooper providing an update after the game.

For City’s first public pre-season friendly, Cooper looks set to pick the same line-up as under Enzo Maresca last season. Danny Ward starts in goal, with Ricardo Pereira, Ben Nelson, captain Conor Coady and Luke Thomas forming the back four.

In midfield, Harry Winks could be the only pivot, with Wilfred Ndidi and Kasey McAteer as number eights in front of him. Equally, Ndidi could be deeper, with McAteer playing as a No.10.

In attack, Daka is flanked by Abdul Fatawu and Stephy Mavididi, the latter scoring the winner against Villarreal. On the bench are the rest of the City squad, bar Vardy, goalkeepers Jakub Stolarczyk and Brad Young and the five internationals who have just returned to training.

It means fans traveling to Shrewsbury will potentially have to wait until the second half to see new signings Michael Golding and Caleb Okoli. Among the replacements is young defender Harvey Godsmark-Ford, who is in the first team for the first time this summer.
